Comparison · QR code generators

A QR generator gives you a link. ItemDocs gives you the page.

Dynamic QR code generators are good at what they do. This is an honest comparison for one job only: putting product manuals, setup help and warranty behind a code printed on a box that has to keep working for years.

The short answer

A QR code generator sells you codes. You get a short link, a choice of what it points to (a website, a PDF, a simple landing page) and scan statistics. ItemDocs sells you a page per product model. The code comes with it, and the page is built for after-sales: Start Here, manual, videos, guides, troubleshooting, warranty and registration, spare parts and support.

The practical differences come down to three questions: what you pay for, what happens to printed codes if you stop paying, and how much of the customer’s problem the page itself solves.

  1. A · Static QR

    Encodes a file address

    Points straight at a PDF. Free and permanent, but if the file moves or changes name, every printed code breaks.

  2. B · Dynamic QR

    Encodes a redirect you rent

    A short link you can repoint. Usually priced per code, sometimes per scan, and it stops redirecting when the subscription ends.

  3. C · Product page

    Encodes the product’s own address

    A permanent page for the model: manual, videos, guides, warranty, parts and support, in the order a customer needs them.

Pricing basis and scan caps

Generators price by the number of dynamic codes, and some also cap scans. ItemDocs prices by the number of active products and never counts scans. A product is one model with its own page and ID; colour and size variants with identical documentation share one. The first product is free forever; the Growth plan covers 50 products.

What happens when you stop paying

This is the question that matters most for packaging. A code printed on 50,000 boxes outlives any subscription decision. Here is what each vendor documents:

  • Uniqode: its help centre says dynamic codes “will only expire if your Uniqode account is canceled”, and that people scanning them are shown an error page. Its pricing FAQ says codes become inactive when a subscription is cancelled or a trial ends.
  • QR Code Generator PRO: after cancelling, codes keep redirecting until the end of the paid period plus 30 days, then point to a service page. Paying again reactivates them. When a trial expires, dynamic codes are deactivated.
  • QR TIGER: its help centre says that when a paid plan expires or is cancelled, “all dynamic QR codes will become invalid”.
  • Scanova: when a subscription expires or is cancelled, dynamic codes stop working and no longer redirect.
  • Bitly works differently: its QR codes are short links, and its help centre says codes on bit.ly links keep working after a downgrade.

ItemDocs: plans are prepaid for a month or a year and never renew automatically. If you don’t renew, the account moves to the Free plan and nothing is deleted. Products over the Free limit are archived, newest first. An archived product keeps its URL, so its printed code still opens a page with the product name and your support details, and you can republish it whenever you have a free slot again. Discontinued products count as active and keep their full page.

What the customer sees after the scan

Most generators can host a PDF or build a simple landing page behind the code, and Uniqode’s documentation describes its PDF code as suitable for product manuals. That is a real improvement on a link to your website’s download section. What it is not is an after-sales page. Compare what a customer can do after scanning:

Analytics and languages

Analytics

Generators report scans, usually with location and device (several include these only on higher plans). ItemDocs reports scans and page opens too, but its most useful report is what customers search for on the page and which searches found nothing. Those unanswered searches become a list of missing guides and FAQs. It also shows which documents, guides and troubleshooting issues are opened and how far videos are watched, with CSV export.

Languages

A generator’s landing page is usually in one language, or one page per language with one code each. An ItemDocs page can be published in up to ten languages, including Hindi, from the same code. Customers switch language on the page, and untranslated content falls back to your default language.

Privacy

ItemDocs product pages set no cookies, analytics use a daily-changing hash instead of IP addresses, and data is hosted in Frankfurt. Details are on the security page.

When a QR generator is enough

A QR generator is the better choice in plenty of cases. Use one when:

  • you need codes for things that are not products: menus, posters, business cards, Wi‑Fi access, event check-in, app downloads;
  • the code points to a page you already run well, such as a support portal on your own domain, and you only need the redirect and scan counts;
  • you want codes in brand colours or with a logo in the middle (ItemDocs codes are plain dark-on-light, which scans most reliably);
  • you need a code per individual unit or serial number. ItemDocs gives one code per product model;
  • your product pages must live on your own domain. ItemDocs pages live at itemdocs.com/i/<ID>.

Choose ItemDocs when the code goes on product packaging and has to keep working for the product’s life, when you want a structured after-sales page rather than a PDF, and when you would rather pay per product than worry about scans. The first product is free, so the quickest way to compare is to build one page and scan it. Plans are on the pricing page.
